This Privacy Policy explains how ReaderBackdrops ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use readerbackdrop.com, our APIs, and related features (the "Service"). It should be read with our Terms of Service.

1. Who we are

ReaderBackdrops is a community gallery of e-reader backgrounds. For privacy questions or requests, email hendriksdevmail@gmail.com.

Users under 16 years old may not use the Service.

2. Information we collect

Account information. If you create an account, we store your display name, email address, and a hashed password (for email sign-up). If you sign in with Google or Discord, we receive the profile details those providers share with us, such as your name, email, and profile image. We also store settings you choose, including marketing email preference, NSFW display preferences, preview-background preference, social profile links, and an API key if you generate one.

Content you submit. When you upload a background we store the image file, title, description, device, tags, and related metadata (such as dimensions and file size). When you create a collection we store its name, description, tags, visibility (public or private), and which images you add. We also store favorites, and likes or follows on collections.

Messages. If you contact us, submit a support issue, or file a takedown request, we store the message and the contact details you provide so we can respond.

Usage information. When you browse the Service we record page views, the page path, referrer, campaign parameters (such as utm_source), approximate country derived from the request, and how long a visit stays open. If you are signed in, that activity may be associated with your account. Downloads and views of backgrounds increment public counters on those images.

Login and security information. When you sign in we record the time, your IP address, browser user agent, and an approximate city and country derived from that IP. IP addresses are also used briefly to rate-limit downloads and reduce abuse. We do not use this data to build a precise location of you.

3. How we use information

We use the information above to:

  • Operate the gallery, accounts, uploads, collections, favorites, and downloads.
  • Authenticate you, keep the Service secure, and enforce our Terms (including bans and copyright takedowns).
  • Show public creator profiles, public uploads, and public collections.
  • Measure which pages and backgrounds are used, so we can improve the Service.
  • Send service messages, and — only if you opt in — occasional marketing and newsletter emails.
  • Respond to support, takedown, and privacy requests.

We do not sell your personal information.

4. What is public

Backgrounds you upload are public. They are stored on UploadThing and may appear in the gallery, on your creator profile, in search results, and in other people's public collections. Your display name, profile image, social links, and public collections are visible on your profile.

Private collections are visible to you (and to site administrators for moderation and support). Favorites are private to your account. Do not upload anything you are not willing to share publicly.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

  • Session cookie. NextAuth sets a session cookie so you stay signed in.
  • Visitor cookie (rb_vid). A random identifier stored for up to one year so we can count unique visitors. It is not used for advertising.
  • Session id. A random identifier kept in session storage for the current browser tab, used to group a visit.
  • Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics (measurement ID G-M2KM8P9KN2) to understand aggregate traffic. Google may set its own cookies and process data under its own policies.
  • Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights. Our host, Vercel, collects performance and traffic metrics for the site.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser. The Service may not remember your sign-in if you do.

6. Who we share information with

We share information with service providers that process it on our behalf:

  • UploadThing hosts image files.
  • PocketBase stores account, content, and analytics records.
  • Vercel hosts the website and provides analytics and performance measurement.
  • Google provides Google Analytics and, if you choose it, Google sign-in.
  • Discord provides Discord sign-in if you choose it.
  • Kit sends newsletter and marketing email to people who opt in.
  • Resend sends and receives service and support email.
  • ip-api.com converts a login IP address into an approximate city and country.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to respond to a valid legal request, or to protect the rights, safety, and integrity of the Service and its users. Public content can be viewed, downloaded, and shared by anyone.

7. How long we keep information

We keep account and content data for as long as your account exists or as needed to operate the Service, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. Login records and analytics are kept so we can secure the site and understand usage, and are removed or aggregated when they are no longer needed for those purposes. Marketing contacts stay on our newsletter list until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them.

8. Your choices

  • Profile and content. You can edit your display name, email, profile image, social links, and preferences in your account settings, and you can edit or delete backgrounds and collections you own.
  • Marketing email. You can opt out of marketing email using the unsubscribe link in those messages, or by contacting us. We may still send service messages about your account.
  • Account deletion. Email-and-password accounts can be deleted from Settings. That removes your account data from our database. If you signed in only with Google or Discord, email hendriksdevmail@gmail.com and we will delete the account for you.
  • Access and correction. Email us if you want a copy of the personal information we hold, or if you want us to correct it.

9. International visitors

The Service is operated from the United States. Information may be processed in the United States and in other countries where our providers operate. Those countries may have different data-protection laws than your own.

10. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
